Kentucky Headhunters make Grand Ole Opry debut

Thirty years later…

By Preshias Harris

Grammy Award-winning southern rock, blues and country group The Kentucky Headhunters have officially made their debut on the stage of the Grand Ole Opry.

Wait, what?!

That has to be a misprint, surely. Three decades at the top of their game and it wasn’t until December 2021 that the Headhunters made it to the Opry? Well, it might be hard to believe but yes, it’s true.

However, they almost played the Opry way back at the beginning of the band’s climb to stardom. Apparently, bluegrass icon Bill Monroe was impressed with their debut album, Pickin’ on Nashville, and suggested that the Opry invite them to appear. In an interview with the Nashville Tennessean, Headhunters co-founder Richard Young said, “I wasn’t there, [but] it was said that Roy Acuff said, ‘They’re probably pretty good boys. They’ll do a fine job, but let’s get ’em a haircut first.”

Much as they would have loved to appear at the Opry, those long-haired country boys weren’t about to get a haircut, even for Mr. Acuff.  They weren’t asked again – at least, not for thirty years.  They finally stepped onto the Opry stage as 2021 drew to a close, long hair still uncut but a little greyer than it used to be.

Kentucky Headhunters set U.K. Tour in Fall 2017

‘Southern rock royalty’ crossing the pond

My good friends and FFA buds, the Kentucky Headhunters are gearing up to take their rowdy, high-energy live show across the pond, as they return to the U.K. for a string of performances this fall. If any of my British friends are reading this, take it from me: don’t miss the opportunity to see these guys who put on a great rockin’ show. Supporting the American band will be U.K. rockers Bad Touch, who will join the Headhunters on all 8 shows this October.

“We first met Bad Touch when they were chosen as our support act after my son John Fred Young’s band, Black Stone Cherry, convinced us to do our first-ever U.K. tour in 2016. In a mere week of touring, the Headhunter’s and Bad Touch became like a band of brothers,” said Richard Young of The Kentucky Headhunters. “There is a certain charm and charisma between the two bands that transcends to the fans of both bands, on stage and off. We’re proud to announce their return for this year’s October U.K. dates. Simply put, it wouldn’t be the same without them.”

VIDEO NEWS: My friends the The Kentucky Headhunters’ music video for “God Loves A Rolling Stone” can now be seen on TasteOfCountry.com. It is the first single from the Headhunters’ new album, ON SAFARI. “The video for ‘God Loves A Rolling Stone’ is a film for all of humanity. It depicts the struggles that many Americans have endured to keep our country’s spirit great and, in the end, shining. I wrote the song for those who are less fortunate, and the part that God plays in all our lives. In his eyes, we’re all the same. Enough said,” stated Richard Young of The Kentucky Headhunters. Headhunters back ‘On Safari’

KY Southern Rock icons still blazin’ after 50 years

My Kentucky buddies are at it again: a new album, that is, from my longtime friends, The Kentucky Headhunters. They’re back from the Rock n’ Roll Jungle, as they put it, with their latest project titled ‘On Safari.

The album, set for a November 4 release premiered on Hillbilly Jim’s Haunted Hayride on SiriusXM’s Outlaw Country channel over the Halloween weekend. That was appropriate, given an album cover that wouldn’t have looked out of place in a ‘Tales From the Crypt’ comic. But judging from the teasers you can hear as part of a 20+ minute EPK at the Headhunters’ website, the emphasis is on their unique blend of Southern rock and blues-tinged country.

A note on the website states that several life-changing events affected the band’s attitude as they recorded the new album. Band members Richard and Fred Young lost their father just three days before heading into the studio to record On Safari, causing the HeadHunters to let their guard down and pour even more emotion into the record, which they have dedicated to the memory of Richard and Fred’s father. Additionally, the band felt a new energy following their first-ever European tour and that energy is evident on tracks that nod at the importance of family and the Southern way of life.

Almost fifty years into their music career, the Kentucky Headhunters are still breathing fire and fresh air into their infectious, hard-rocking, unique sound. See ‘em live by all means, but definitely give a listen to their 12th studio album, ‘On Safari.’
